PERSONAL MAGIC

How do we uncover the truth about ourselves?

In my case, it usually involves heeding the words coming out of my mouth in an unedited conversation with a friend.  I have learned to pay attention to what comes up when I speak with someone close.

A few weeks ago, a good friend and I were talking about stress, and how we deal with it. I heard myself say that I expect myself to be a magician, to conjure up outcomes in my life. I shared that I felt responsible for determining the direction of currents in my life.

Imagine the stress produced by such an expectation!

As the words came out of my mouth, the image of the Magician popped into my mind’s eye: a young apprentice, standing behind an altar surveying his tools. The Magician, number one in the tarot, the card representing my life’s mission, should I accept it.

Did I?

As a maker, I have always been intrigued by magic. The concept of transforming things from one form into another attracts me. I love diving beneath the surface of everything, exploring the alchemy of change. The idea that someone could conjure things out of the ether fascinates me.

Is that what the magician does?  Does the magician conjure things out of the ether? Or does the magician make magic what is already here.

What is magic, really?

The answer for me is to be found by reconnecting to my creative process. The energy of transformation animates my creative work. I am fuelled by curiosity. Handing over the wheel to this part of myself completely shifts my perspective, away from the outcome, shining the light on the fascinating process of discovery.

The answer for me is to hand over the wheel.

Easier said than done, but, as they say, it’s a process.
